Takashi Soga solo exhibition

For the first time in quite a while, we are delighted to present a solo exhibition by Soga—his first at our gallery in nearly three years.

There is nothing particularly new here.

Instead, this exhibition offers a glimpse of where Soga stands today on his lifelong pursuit of Ko-Bizen, or Old Bizen ware.

Put like that, it makes for a terribly unexciting exhibition introduction and, from a commercial point of view, gives me very little to work with. But with my limited powers of expression, there is not much else I can do.

What I can say with certainty is that his works possess a beauty breathtaking enough to stop you in your tracks.

What Soga has been patiently and steadily refining over the years is unmistakably gaining in brilliance. Precisely because the work is so restrained and unadorned, the pure appeal of ceramics itself comes sharply into focus.

We hope you will come and experience it for yourself.

I have not seen Soga in nearly three years, so before the exhibition I plan to travel to Bizen to see what he is thinking about and how he is working today. I do not usually post much about my visits to artists on social media, but this time I hope to share photographs and other material showing Soga’s pottery tools, kiln, techniques, and his thoroughly committed approach to following the traditions of Ko-Bizen.
