We are pleased to present our fourth solo exhibition by Gengaku-Sadamitsu Sugimoto.
With each exhibition, Sugimoto presents works exploring new techniques, and this time he will show celadon inspired by ceramics of the Song dynasty. Compared with the Goryeo celadon he has made in the past, these new works are distinguished by an even more subdued blue and an appealing surface texture. Their surfaces seem to hold translucency deep within an opaque quality, creating a sense of depth that draws the eye in. I feel that this is a new kind of celadon that nevertheless sits firmly within the natural progression of Sugimoto’s work.
Since our Raku Yunomi Exhibition last year, he has apparently been making yunomi quite frequently, and he will present some again this time. These pieces, however, are made in dimensions that also allow them to be used as travelling tea bowls. The idea is to use them regularly as yunomi, allowing them to develop character over time, so that by the time they are used as travelling tea bowls they will already have acquired a wonderful atmosphere. There is something simply enjoyable about this kind of versatility. We hope you will pay particular attention to these pieces as well.
The exhibition will present a wide range of works, centering on his popular black, red, white, and Ido pieces. There will also be a particularly strong selection of hanging flower vessels this time. Sugimoto himself will also be present at the gallery for the first time in quite a while. We warmly invite you to visit!
