Genkaku Sadamitsu Sugimoto solo exhibition

We are pleased to present our first solo exhibition of Sadamitsu Sugimoto in two years. This exhibition will focus on chawan, which he has been reconsidering in recent years from a new perspective.

The chawan of Chōjirō were created through his collaboration with Sen no Rikyū. Looking at these chawan anew, Sugimoto came to realize that their dimensions are close to those of what we now call kofuku chawan, or small chawan. He considers this observation important in tracing Rikyū’s ideas and has been creating chawan with this thought in mind. We warmly encourage you to hear more about his thinking directly from the artist at the gallery.

Of course, the exhibition is not limited to chawan. Sugimoto will also present a rich selection of flower vessels, sake ware, and tableware in a wide range of techniques, including three types of celadon that he has been exploring recently.

Whether Raku, Oribe, or celadon, a quality shared by Sugimoto’s work is its restraint: never overly decorative, it carries a quiet sense of sabi. We hope that paying attention to this aspect will offer another way to appreciate his work.
