Once again this year, we are pleased to present a solo exhibition by Hideki Yanashita.
Recently, I have felt that the balance between stillness and movement in Yanashita’s work has been shifting more toward movement, and this time the change can be seen quite clearly. Stronger fluting, even unexpected touches of colour! It seems to incorporate something of the spirit of Oribe, yet at the same time there is something distinctly Showa about it that feels nostalgic. Living today, we cannot truly feel nostalgia for the Momoyama or Edo periods, but the Showa era is close enough for us to do so. I do not know whether Yanashita himself sees it this way, but the works offer a new kind of emotional experience. Perhaps this is one of his explorations of the idea he often speaks of: constancy and change.
At the same time, the thoroughly Momoyama character that forms the foundation of Yanashita’s work remains very much alive. When the movement changes, the stillness inevitably changes with it. We hope you will pay particular attention to this aspect as well.
