This year, we are once again delighted to present a solo exhibition by Katsunori Sawa.
There may be no dramatic changes at first glance, but each year I can clearly sense a steady refinement in his technique and expression—from the crispness of his forms to the movement and confidence of his brushwork.
The appeal of Sawa’s work can be found in details throughout: the treatment of the foot and rim, the marks left by his carving tools, the movement of the brush in his painted decoration, and the way the glaze is applied. It is precisely these subtle techniques and observations that support his more strongly designed works, such as Oribe and yobitsugi.
The exhibition will center on his Shigaraki, as vivid and expressive from the firing as ever, and his unmistakable Oribe—works that anyone familiar with Sawa could recognize as his at a glance. We will also present his yobitsugi pieces, which have now become a signature part of his work and continue to grow in popularity.
