We are pleased to present another solo exhibition by Katsunori Sawa this year.
Alongside new works in his familiar Oribe, Shigaraki, and Yobitsugi styles, the exhibition will also feature Shigaraki pieces made using clay left behind by his father, the late Kiyotsugu Sawa.
One of the most distinctive characteristics of Kiyotsugu’s work was his use of Shigaraki clay containing large particles of feldspar. Combined with his powerful forms and the vivid reddish tones and natural kiln effects produced through wood firing, the coarse texture of this clay gave his work its unmistakably bold and vigorous character.
We are very interested to see how Katsunori engages with this clay and what kind of answer he finds through his own work. These pieces were completed too late to be included in the exhibition catalogue, so we warmly encourage you to come and see them in person. I am personally very much looking forward to seeing them as well.
As always, the exhibition will feature a wide selection of tea utensils, flower vessels, sake ware, and tableware.
