We are delighted to present a solo exhibition by Kazuo Toyomasu.
Toyomasu works primarily with sometsuke—blue-and-white porcelain—a style relatively uncommon among the artists represented by our gallery. His ceramics are deeply rooted in the classical traditions of China and Korea.
Sometsuke often brings to mind the elegance of vivid cobalt-blue decoration against a pure white porcelain body. Toyomasu’s work, however, possesses a quieter, weathered character that gives his vessels a remarkable sense of calm.
Even highly intentional decorative elements, such as painting and carving, blend naturally into the individual surfaces and forms of his vessels, never seeming forced or separate from the work itself. Perhaps it is this quality that creates such a sense of harmony.
Through an exquisite balance of color, texture, and visual depth, the surfaces themselves acquire a beauty that can captivate even those of us who are usually drawn to the earthy character of stoneware and earthenware.
