We are pleased to present our first solo exhibition by Kiko Ando. His given name is rather unusual and is pronounced “Kiko.” He was born in Yokohama.
Working within the tradition of Bizen, where expression is created through unglazed high-fired ceramics, Ando makes pottery that feels particularly well suited to the needs of contemporary life. Rather than asserting an overwhelming individuality, his personality seems to be subtly scattered throughout forms made with the user in mind. This does not mean that his work is merely safe or conventional. These are unmistakably the works of Kiko Ando, combining sincere craftsmanship with surfaces shaped by his own identity as a Bizen potter. Although we were unable to include them in this announcement, he also creates playful works, including a tea basket and travelling tea bowl set made in collaboration with a bamboo craftsman.
The exhibition will feature a generous selection of tea ware, flower vessels, sake ware, and tableware, with captivating kiln effects ranging from vivid scarlet to deep, substantial black. We warmly invite you to visit!
