For our first exhibition of 2024, we are pleased to present a solo exhibition by Makoto Yamaguchi.
We have long known that Yamaguchi possesses the imagination to conceive works of highly refined design and immediately recognizable beauty, with the depth of texture and form that ceramics can offer—as well as the skill to bring those ideas to life and the perseverance required for painstaking work. But the level of his work has continued to rise at a remarkable pace, and he has now become an artist capable of producing pieces that are almost frightening in their quality.
One quality that can be found consistently throughout his work is the beauty of its balance and construction. Even a simple form can leave a completely different impression depending on such details as the distribution of thickness and the treatment of the rim. Whether a form is bold or simple, the secret of its beauty lies in the details. We hope you will pay particular attention to these aspects as well.
The exhibition will focus on his popular Oribe, Ofuke, and Shino works, along with a new style of Aka-Shino that he has recently introduced. Although they were not completed in time to be photographed for the exhibition invitation, he will also present works from his Oribe Rinpa series incorporating Sotatsu’s White Elephant painting.
