Once again this year, we are pleased to present a solo exhibition by Masayasu Chujo. The exhibition will focus on his utsushi works based on Kenzan, as well as pieces featuring his own original designs developed from that tradition.
As our gallery works with relatively few artists who use figurative painting, with work like Chujo’s it is easy to become captivated by the painting and intricate decoration. However, we would also encourage you to pay close attention to the surface qualities of the pieces. Even subtle differences in the surface, the glaze, or the colour of the iron painting can dramatically change the overall impression. From the careful selection of materials to thoughtful adjustments in firing methods, attention to detail can be found throughout his process. No matter how elaborate the design becomes, the essential qualities of the work as ceramics are never left behind. At the risk of repeating ourselves, beauty is maintained through the balance between material quality and form.
Although they were not completed in time to appear in our direct mail announcement, the exhibition will also feature new designs, including guinomi that incorporate decorative motifs from celebrated historical masterpieces. We warmly invite you to visit!
