We are delighted to present our very first solo exhibition by Ryoko Suzuki. Hooray!
Among the artists we work with, Suzuki is unusual in that she specializes exclusively in porcelain. Unlike stoneware, her work does not aim for dramatic kiln transformations, and as you can see, it is based around a translucent white. And yet! Its surfaces are filled with all the fascinating qualities that make ceramics so compelling. Just as with stoneware, these qualities are the result of extensive research and experimentation with clay, glazes, pigments for painted decoration, and firing. One might describe it as painted porcelain created with an awareness of extremely subtle kiln transformations. Wonderful!
Her designs are rooted in ancient Chinese ceramics, into which she blends an atmosphere entirely her own. With brushwork that is both delicate and full of movement, her pieces offer not only beauty but also a variety of stories.
