We are pleased to present our tenth solo exhibition by Takashi Tanimoto. How grateful we are!
As you can see, Tanimoto’s Iga, fired under extremely strong reduction, has a distinctive palette with relatively low brightness and saturation. In painting or film, such colours can give a decadent impression, and I feel much the same when I see them in ceramics. This does not, however, mean that Tanimoto is a gloomy, destructive, immoral person secretly plotting the destruction of the Earth. As proof, perhaps, you can find flashes of sparkling natural ash glaze and fresh scarlet tones here and there.
These elements interact with one another, setting an entire world in motion within each work. His idiosyncratic forms also succeed as works because their individual parts relate to one another in complex ways while maintaining an overall balance. There is little more uncomfortable than asymmetry without balance, but the world created through Tanimoto’s particular sense of proportion is fascinating and possesses a distinctive kind of comfort.
