As our first special exhibition of 2023, we are delighted to present a solo exhibition by Yu Nishioka.
In recent years, Nishioka has been energetically exploring new techniques and designs. Works such as Ena-guri, Oribe Shisai, Kokukode, and Mino Sometsuke all build upon classical ceramic techniques, yet the results are both approachable and stimulating—and, above all, simply fun.
One of the reasons Nishioka is able to create such new expressions is that he never stops refining the fundamental quality of his ceramics. This exhibition offers an opportunity to take a close look at where Nishioka stands today.
He is also planning to present yet another new development: Black Oribe. Unfortunately, these works were not completed in time to be included in the catalogue, but they have turned out beautifully. Nishioka has thoroughly absorbed what makes Oribe so fascinating as a style, while allowing his own individuality to emerge naturally through the work.
The exhibition will also feature some of his popular works, including abura-age Kizeto and Oribe.
