This year, we are delighted to present a solo exhibition by Yu Sugimoto.
Sugimoto works exclusively with Shigaraki, and every time I see his work, I am impressed by just how many different expressions he can draw from the same clay through unglazed, high-fired ware.
The exhibition will also feature new designs incorporating openwork carving, a technique that is gradually becoming one of Sugimoto’s signatures.
The coarse character of Shigaraki clay may seem particularly well suited to relaxed, generous forms, but it can be equally striking when used for carefully balanced and refined shapes.
Because the clay contains relatively large stones and other coarse particles, I imagine carving such intricate openwork into it must be extremely difficult.
And precisely because I know how difficult it must be, I cannot help wanting to ask him to do it.
Human nature, I suppose.
This year, Sugimoto will also present a small selection of kohiki works.
