Hiroyumi Suzuki

While attending university, he entered the field of ceramics through a pottery club of which he was a member. After graduating, he persuaded his parents, who opposed his decision, and traveled to Korea with the introduction of his father, a scholar of the anthropology of religion. After spending a year and a half in Korea, including periods of training in Mungyeong and Gyeongju, he moved to Shigaraki following his encounter with Kiyotsugu Sawa and began his career as a full-time ceramic artist. Joseon ceramics, with their constraints on materials and form, and the high-fired, unglazed wares of Shigaraki and Iga, which allow for far greater freedom of expression, represent contrasting ceramic traditions. Yet, despite employing these contrasting approaches, both bodies of work are united by the same well-balanced sense of form.
