An Evening with Hiroyumi Suzuki at Nogizaka Shin
June 9, 2023 - June 12, 2023
We are delighted to present “An Evening with Hiroyumi Suzuki at Nogizaka Shin.”
For this occasion, we welcome Hiroyumi Suzuki from Iga, Mie Prefecture.
Originally from Sendai, Suzuki first became involved with ceramics through a pottery club while at university. By the time he graduated, he had decided to pursue a career as a ceramic artist. Anticipating opposition from those around him, however, he took a rather bold approach: immediately after graduation, he left Japan for Korea to train in ceramics—effectively silencing any objections before they could even be raised.
That momentum never faded. After returning to Japan, he established himself as an independent ceramic artist and has built a remarkable reputation in a field where ceramic traditions are often passed down through generations.
Driven by an inexhaustible curiosity about ceramics, Suzuki continues to explore and research a remarkably broad range of traditions. His work encompasses Korean ceramics, particularly those of the Joseon dynasty, which originated in the country where he chose to train, as well as Iga and Shigaraki from the region where he now works, together with Raku, Karatsu, Shino, and Oribe.
His designs are equally diverse, ranging from interpretations deeply rooted in classical ceramics to highly individual expressions of his own, offering us an extraordinary variety to enjoy.
This time, Suzuki was invited at the particular request of Shinji Ishida, owner and chef of Nogizaka Shin.
This collaboration may therefore take a slightly different direction from those we have presented in the past.
We invite you to join us and experience this very special occasion for yourself.
