Noriyuki Furutani

Noriyuki Furutani, the son of Michio Furutani, a pioneer of anagama firing in contemporary Shigaraki, continues to fire Tenmoku ware in anagama kilns even today, when electric kilns have become the dominant method of firing. His interest is directed not toward the recreation of Song-dynasty Tenmoku, but toward a new practice of Tenmoku that emerges from the tension between the unpredictability inherent in anagama firing and the highly refined firing techniques employed to harness it. In recent years, he has moved beyond the constraints of the tea bowl, expanding his practice to a wide variety of forms and further extending the possibilities of Tenmoku.
