This year, we are once again delighted to present a solo exhibition by Kazuhiro Fukushima.
Fukushima’s work is characterized by dramatic kiln transformations and powerful, substantial forms—and this year, it feels as though his work has gained another layer of muscle.
I say “muscle,” but behind those wild and untamed kiln effects lies meticulous calculation.
His Iga Shino, which he began presenting last year, is fired multiple times with specific results in mind, gradually building up the keshiki—the landscapes that emerge across its surfaces. After being exposed directly to flame and ash in the anagama, the works are refired again and again using different methods and temperatures. Through this process, kiln effects that might otherwise be left largely to nature are transformed into deliberately developed landscapes that belong to the work itself.
The relationship between firing and form has also become increasingly refined, and I feel that the direction of Fukushima’s work has come into much sharper focus.
The exhibition will feature an outstanding selection of tea wares, flower vessels, sake wares, and tableware.
