Once again this year, we are pleased to present a solo exhibition by Shinya Fukushima.
It seems to me that the unity between Fukushima’s thinking and his work grows stronger with each passing year, and this year is no exception. Somehow, even in works I am seeing for the first time, I can sense Fukushima’s character more strongly than in his earlier pieces. I find this fascinating.
At the Fukushima family home stands an enormous anagama kiln. This exhibition will focus on Iga and Shino fired in that kiln, alongside Oribe and Fukushima’s distinctive Iga-Shino. Iga-Shino is a body of work he has been developing over the past several years, in which Shino is fired repeatedly in the manner of Iga, producing dramatic kiln transformations. He will also present a separate new group of Shino works with particularly vivid scarlet firing effects.
You will also be able to see the enormous kiln-transformed jar pictured on this page. Because a piece of this size is fired close to the firebox, there is a considerable temperature difference between its front and back, making it highly likely to crack during firing. This one, however, emerged from the kiln safely. Amazing!
