Once again this year, we are pleased to present a solo exhibition by Tomohiro Matsumoto.
Since last year, Matsumoto has been presenting works with a highly transparent, strongly blue-toned ash glaze. This time, he has developed it further to create a new Annamese-inspired style called Beni-Annan-de. The red typically seen in Annamese ware is overglaze red decoration, but here the red is produced with underglaze copper red, applied beneath the glaze. This gives the work a lighter, more airy impression than traditional Annamese ware. Some pieces also feature carved patterns, giving us plenty to discover and enjoy!
As with this new Beni-Annan-de, Matsumoto has continued to develop new approaches rooted in classical traditions, including his Yuka-Shigaraki, in which wood-fired Shigaraki is glazed and then fired again. These explorations offer a kind of enjoyment quite unlike the work of other artists.
Alongside these new works, the exhibition will also feature the ash-glazed and cobalt-decorated ash-glazed pieces that were so well received last time, as well as the Shigaraki ware Matsumoto has pursued for many years. We warmly invite you to visit!
