Tomohiro Matsumoto

Matsumoto first attracted attention with his Akamaki series, in which he introduced overglaze enamels to Shigaraki ware. He has since developed a wide range of techniques, including the Haiyū Gosu series, distinguished by the interplay of vivid cobalt blue and ash glaze, and the Yūka Shigaraki series, in which works are glazed and fired a second time following an initial wood firing. Grounded in the solid technical foundation he has cultivated over many years, Matsumoto refuses to be confined to a single style. Instead, he continues to create in response to the ideas that emerge at any given moment. This commitment to following his creative intuition, rather than adhering to a fixed mode of expression, is one of the defining qualities of his work.
